Chocolate samosas and Indian fundraisers
A very timely article indeed (and quite a news day for South Asians and philanthropy!). This Boston Globe piece illustrates exactly what Venu and I wrote about yesterday regarding the question of giving here vs. there, and how to encourage giving among South Asian Americans. Although the article did reinforce the notion that Venu described about South Asians being among the wealthiest groups in the country, I thought it also did a good job of describing a diversity of some great charities and some very dedicated donors.
That said, I thought the article was a bit too focused on the silent auction and “chocolate samosa” aspect of Indian philanthropy and fundraisers, instead of the individuals’ motives for giving or more details about the charities (although chocolate samosas do sound yummy…). My only other critique was that the article could have included some more examples of American-born South Asian philanthropists… What did you all think?
