Texas Charity Search and Tax Time of Year

February 17, 2009

For all you desis in Texas, especially the Houston area, check out this nifty new tool from the Texas Attorney General’s office called “Charity Search.”  It’s got resources for donors nationwide, plus it will have access to the IRS form 990s of Texas nonprofits so donors can go to the source of information directly when evaluating where to give.  (As I learned from SAALT’s excellent report on the demographic characteristics of South Asian Americans, there are a whole lot of desis down in the Lone Star State…)

For the rest of you, I imagine we’ll do more tax postings in the future, but for now, the IRS has updated its important Publication 526 on charitable contributions with information on filling out your 2008 tax return and on the general rules about deducting your donations.

(Hat tip on these to Nonprofit Law Prof Blog.)
