National Day of Service and Hoosier Hills
In honor of MLK Day and the National Day of Service, I spent the morning with my friend Rachel at the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, helping to get bags ready for their two big spring food drives. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the coming of Change tomorrow and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was glad to see that the President-Elect was out volunteering too! I wrote earlier about being drawn to more local causes this year, like food banks, because of the way we’re seeing the economic downturn affect those in our own backyards.
This morning at the food bank, there were a couple of Boy Scout troops, an IU sorority team, and assorted friends and neighbors, including a special ed teacher from the local high school and an IU grad student. Everyone was talking and meeting new people, excited about the inauguration tomorrow. It’s amazing to think what kind of effect our new President will have in terms of making giving and national service “cool”…
