Fair trade philanthropy

August 26, 2010

One of my most favorite memories of traveling to India as a child was walking across the street with a parent, a cousin, an aunt or an uncle, to get some Cadbury chocolate in Gandhi Bazaar.  And so, I was very excited to see a billboard on the TTC yesterday announcing that Cadbury Dairy Milk is going fair trade this fall:

100 years ago William Cadbury chose beans from Ghana. A year ago we founded the Cadbury Cocoa Partnership. And from Autumn 2009 Cadbury Dairy Milk has been Fairtrade certified. Welcome aboard.

I have been thinking a lot about cause-related marketing – buying products that give part of their profits to charity – and whether or not that is philanthropy.  I guess the same would be true of buying fair trade products.  Is choosing to put your money behind one product over another “charity” because of the social good that may result?  What do you think?
