Azim Premji pledges billions to rural education in India
Wipro Ltd. chairman Azim Premji has pledged an incredible $2 billion dollars to help improve education in India, the Times of India reports. The gift is made in Wipro stock to Premji’s own foundation. According to the Times of India, this is the largest philanthropic gift ever to be made by an Indian.
I was glad that Premji characterized his gift as more than philanthropy or charity alone: “I’m completely committed to supporting the larger ambition of creating the required social change.”
The article asks – as does SAPP – will this gift inspire other wealthy Indians to follow suit?
