Ms. Foundation names Anika Rahman new President

January 7, 2011

We are excited to welcome another South Asian women at the helm of a foundation doing such innovative and important work in the women’s movement.   Anika Rahman will join the Ms. Foundation for Women as president and CEO in February of 2011.

Rahman has served as president of Americans for UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) for the past six years. In her tenure, she significantly increased Unites States funding for the UNFPA from both public and private sources and made a powerful impact on American awareness of the global issues facing women. Rahman was drawn to Ms. Foundation for Women’s charge of ending violence, increasing participation in democracy, creating economic justice and ensuring women’s health.

Says Rahman:

Women are more than half the population, yet—even with the progress of the last several decades—we don’t have equal opportunity, voice or power. I was brought up in Bangladesh by strong women and was able to see first hand the damage of inequality and injustice. As an immigrant to the United States and a woman of color I have seen the challenges faced by women here in the U.S. and the incredible power and impact that we have, together.

To learn more about how she built her management and fundraising skills, meet Anika Rahman and read her personal statement.  See the full press release.
