“Why do rich Indians fall behind in philanthropy?”

January 14, 2011

We could have written that title ourselves!  It’s the title of an article in The Economic Times.  Also, I stumbled across this timeline of giving in India.  I don’t fully agree with its methodology, but it is an interesting visual.

There’s a lot of conversation about the philanthropy (or the lack of it) in India today.  What are your thoughts?

I thought it was a really interesting article – thanks for linking to it! The beginning was especially fascinating – about all the hypotheses regarding Indians’ lack of giving when people and institutions (like the Ford Foundation) just may be defining it the wrong way. The rest of the article got a little too deep into her book/thesis which sounds like it was less about philanthropy and more about how Indian business leaders coped with colonial rule.
