Two South Asian Organizations win MacArthur Foundation’s Creative and Effective Nonprofits Award!

January 20, 2011

SAPP would like to congratulate the two South Asian organizations that received the MacArthur Foundation’s Creative and Effective Nonprofits award:  Action Research and Training for Health located in Rajasthan, India and The Royal Society for the Protection of Nature located in Thimphu, Bhutan.  Both organizations will receive $350,000 of unrestricted funds.

This particular award is “recognize [s] exceptional Foundation grantees and help ensure their sustainability with grants of $350,000 to $1 million each, a large sum given that recipients’ annual operating budgets are under $5 million.”    The Foundation recognized 11 nonprofits in 5 countries.  “These exceptional organizations effectively address pressing national and international challenges and they have had an impact that is disproportionate to their small size,” said MacArthur President Robert Gallucci.

The Wall Street Journal acknowledged the award on its IndiaRealTime blog.

Are any of familiar with the organizations above?  Or do you have thoughts about other South Asian focused organizations that should have gotten the award?
