Giving Smart…

June 29, 2011

Two recent articles of interest with thoughts and guidance on how we can give more effectively and thoughtfully:

In Ten Principles of International Giving Doug Balfour, CEO of Geneva Global, highlights ways donors can be successful with their giving.  With guidance such as “look for individual transformation and an accelerating factor that will bring systemic change” and “grant to programs that offer both scale and sustainability,” the principles apply to giving anywhere, locally or abroad.

And if you haven’t already checked out Thomas Tierney and Joel Fleishman’s book Give Smart: Philanthropy that Gets Results, take a quick read of this interview with Fleishman, in which he addresses six questions individual donors and foundations should ask themselves in order to give “smart,” including having a clear idea of what and why you want to fund something, what you hope to accomplish and how you will know.

Good food for thought…
