Giving Pledge Ripples . . .

August 8, 2011

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, known as India’s “Warren Buffet,”  has pledged a quarter of his wealth to charity.  Jhunjhunwala is an investor at Rare Enterprises and ranked 1,062 among the world’s richest by Forbes.

More conversation among India’s philanthropists took place at Give India’s first “Givers Summit.”  The summit brought together people interested in changing the lives of the underprivileged – NGO leaders, philanthropists, etc.

Participants discussed a number of issues including  identifying issues, finding trustworthy organizations, and metrics for success.  Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Limited and noted philanthropist, attended by telephone and talked about his approach to philanthropy.  For more information about the summit go here.

What do folks think about Jhunjhunwala’s pledge?  Do you think others will follow?  Do you think someone will hold him accountable for following through on his intentions?
