Sardul Gill gives $5 million to University of Victoria

October 20, 2011

The Gustavson School of Business at University of Victoria received a $5 million gift last week from South Asian alumnus Sardul Gill.  Gill is a retired real estate developer whose parents are originally from Punjab, India.  The money will be an endowment for scholarships and awards and has resulted in the renaming of the business school’s graduate programs.  The Globe and Mail reports:

A Victoria-born son of Sikh immigrants from Punjab, India, Mr. Gill said in the release that his father came to Victoria in 1906 and his mother 20 years later “when there were significant barriers to people of Indian descent in this country.” Mr. Gill said he made the gift to honour his parents for their encouragement of his pursuit of higher education.

The BC Local News reports that “it might also be the biggest gift to any Canadian university from a person of South Asian descent.”  Way to go Mr. Gill and congratulations to UVic!
